Geek Chic: Museums All Grown UP

Imagine: YOU, a stellar geekette/geek stud secured the date of your dreams! Now, where can you take this hot dude or dudette to impress them, but still maintain integrity to your true nerdy self? Answer: A night at the museum! Wait. I know what you are thinking: “Night at the museum? Like the movie?!”

Um, no. Luckily for my Geek Chic Krisraelreaders you will learn about the hottest after hours events at the best science museums in the Bay Area! In other words my favorite geeky first date formula: booze + dark + dancing + music + fun science stuff = MUSEUMS ALL GROWN UP!

For the 18+ crowd:

After Dark: Exploratorium

Upcoming Event: DIRT, Thursday June 7 from 6:00-10:00pm

“Dig into soil science and get the dirt on everything from mushrooms to meteorites.

Exploratorium physicist and Mars expert Paul Doherty pilots a tour of extraterrestrial dirt found as far away as Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, and as near as your own home. Fellow staff scientist Bryce Johnson steers us through San Francisco Bay’s sediments and Exploratorium biologist Karen Kalumuck reveals the creeping, crawling world inside a rotting log. And in an edible approach to our theme, mushroom farmers from Back to the Roots share secrets to growing gourmet mushrooms from coffee grounds.

Dirt also features compost demonstrations, urban farming explorations, special films, and an exhibition of historic color photographs documenting the end of the Dust Bowl era.”

Before bedtime, settle in for story time while snacking on cookies and milk and learn about Pierre — the Academy’s famous wetsuit-wearing penguin. When the lights go out, unroll your sleeping bag in African Hall, next to the swaying kelp of the California Coast tank, or even at the Swamp window, face-to-face with Claude, the albino alligator. Mo’s Geek Chic Take: Museums at night are a total win, not just to calm first date jitters but to have a remarkable and unique experience with friends. Whether it be an after hours event or an adult sleepover, you will be able to learn something educational but still have adult fun. For example, when I first went to the California Academy of Sciences NightLife event I didn’t know what to expect. Whenever, someone asks me how my experience was this is what I reply. . .

“Museums at night are fantastic! Not only is it a cheaper museum admission rate, you don’t have to deal with screaming kids and baby strollers while you look at your favorite penguin exhibit. And let’s face it: It’s kind of amazing to be able to hold a beer in one hand and touch a sea urchin in a tide pool with the other as long as the beer doesn’t spill. Science is COOL again!”

Until next week: Stay true. Stay you. Stay geek chic! -Mo
